Hair Transplant Surgery – What Are The Risks?
A hair transplant is generally a low-risk procedure, but as with any other surgery, there is always a small risk that there can be some kind of complication. The likeliness of any small problems is highly dependent on many different factors, such as the exact method chosen and the skill of the doctor who will be performing the procedure. The reason why the method was chosen makes a difference is because of the two major hair transplant methods, the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method and the Strip surgery, have clear differences, for instance, one involves the removal of a strip of skin which will add a few additional risks.
Overall, a hair transplant is a safe procedure, especially if being treated by an experienced doctor but there is always a small possibility that something can go wrong or that the surgery will not lead to the best possible outcome. Most hair transplant procedures require local anesthesia, which carries only a very small risk, but in healthy people, there is nothing to be concerned about. Another small risk is that hair will be placed in a manner that results in an unnatural look, but as long as the client has chosen the best doctor possible, achieving a natural look should not be a problem.
Another very small, but possible risk, with a hair transplant is that the new hair will not take root, or not grow. This can be due to dry or damaged grafts or for other unknown reasons. But for the majority of clients, the transplanted hair will start to grow a few months after surgery and continue growing for one year at which point final results will be available. Shock loss is another small risk that can occur. It means that the surrounding hair can get “traumatized” and fall out as a result of the surgery. The shock loss can occur for a shorter or longer period of time, but in almost all cases it is temporary and the lost hair will grow back.
Infection is only a small risk when it comes to hair transplant procedures because doctors take steps to prevent it. Antibiotics can be given both before and after the surgery, but if despite the preventative measures the client experiences excess swelling, redness and oozing from the scalp he or she should contact the doctor immediately.
While most risks associated with a hair transplant are very small, the client plays an important role in the avoidance of such risks. The doctor should be completely aware of the client’s lifestyle as well as his or her medical history. Being honest is always wise, as the doctor may need to make adjustments depending on the circumstances. Following pre and post operating instructions is also important in order to minimize any risk. Smokers should quit smoking at least three to four weeks before the surgery as smoking can inhibit the proper healing of wounds.
